Children with Parents in Prison: Disenfranchised Grievers Who Benefit from Bibliotherapy

This article defines children of prisoners as 'disenfranchised grievers' coping with compounded losses, similar to children whose parents have died.

The authors consider the literature on 'disenfranchised grief' and apply William Worden's four emotional tasks for grieving children to children whose parents have gone to prison. The article then suggests the use of bibliotherapy as an effective intervention. Juvenile literature written specifically for this population is analysed accordingly.
