This peer reviewed study uses data from a UK mixed methods longitudinal study to explore how good quality face-to-face and telephone contact between children and imprisoned fathers correlated positively with a good relationship post release.
This was found to be significantly the case even when controlling for how long the father-child relationship lasted prior to imprisonment. Qualitative data to substantiate these findings highlighted that limited familiar interactions such as emotional support, physical comfort etc played a key role in maintaining the father-child relationship.
