This short report, from the International Association of Chiefs of Police is co written with the US Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance and Office of Justice programmes. It can be learned from by police professionals anywhere. It notes that the arrest of a parent can have a significant impact on a child, whether or not the child is present at the time of the arrest.
Over the past 20 years an increasing body of research has emerged into the effects of these events on children of various ages and the ways in which law enforcement can ensure that these children are not forgotten. However there has been a lack of clear guidance around how to support these children. This report, an initiative of the Deputy Attorney General and White House Domestic Policy Council and sponsored by the Bureau of Justice Assistance provides detailed policy and procedure recommendations and an in depth look at the potential impact of parental arrests on children. The report looks at the scope of the problem and how many children are affected, the legal responsibility of law enforcement professionals towards children of arrested parents, policies including multiagency working, pre arrest planning, making an arrest, appropriate placement of a child, station reception (Booking), follow up visits and documentation.
