This report draws on interviews with children to document the impact that the imprisonment of their mother has had on their lives: including long term emotional, social, material and psychological damage, with little or no dedicated support.
The Howard League were the first to ask children what they thought about having a mother in prison in the 1990's. This revised edition demonstrates the ongoing importance of hearing children's voices. The demographic information about women prisoners has allowed an estimate that 17,240 children are separated from their mother by imprisonment every year in the UK. However, this report considers that this may be an underestimation due to dishonesty about the number of children women are responsible for due to fear of repercussions this may have, the fact that more than half the women enter prison on remand, and the majority do not receive a custodial sentence or are found not guilty.
