This document contains a poster and three page briefing about children and families affected by parental offending and how NICCO can assist children's rights advocates to support them.
The briefing summarises some of the key effects of imprisonment on children and, with reference to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), considers which of their rights are particularly impacted on by a parent's involvement in the criminal justice system. The unique ability of advocates to support offenders' children to have their voice heard and best interests considered is presented. The briefing highlights how NICCO can help children's rights advocates to provide support and representation to children of offenders. The poster and briefing include direct quotes from families and examples of current rights-based practice.
