This guidance, primarily aimed at education professionals but accessible to multiagency professionals, works in line with Every Child Matters and the 2004 Children's Act.
It aims to raise awareness of the impact of family imprisonment on children and looks at how to meet their needs. The 13 page document includes sections which cover: information sharing and confidentiality, school recording, children's ability to confide in someone, who to inform (working within a need to know framework), the role of a designated member of staff, staff awareness of the emotional impact especially internalisation, other anxieties in children of prisoners, identification of prisoners children, classroom management, children in the same family, basic principles, the emotional impact on the child, guidance on prison visits and prison attendance and prisoner release. There is also a section dedicated to useful contacts for support and advice.
