National Occupational Standard - Carry out playwork in prisons

National Occupational Standards (NOS) are statements of the standards of performance individuals must achieve when carrying out functions in the workplace, together with specifications of the underpinning knowledge and understanding.

This National Occupational Standard is for playworkers who are planning and implementing play opportunities for children and young people visiting a parent or relative in prison. It includes the understanding of working in a restricted environment and a stressful setting, while ensuring the prison rules and regulations are followed, and also covers the need for the playworker to be an advocate for the value of play to parents, carers and prison staff. The standard covers what playworkers should achieve; plan and prepare for children and young people's play in prisons, support children and young people's play in prisons and build relationships relevant to playwork in prisons.
