This information and advice booklet is for families of people convicted of sexual offences.
Produced by Families Outside in conjunction with Barnardo's Scotland, Stop it Now! and Edinburgh City Council, it is written and intended for direct use by family members but is also a useful source of information for professionals supporting families in this situation. While some of the information and the services listed in the booklet are Scotland-focused, generally the guidance is relevant to any family in this position. The booklet is based on real-life experiences of families and is filled with direct quotes throughout. Sections cover: Understanding what has happened, the emotional journey, taking care of yourself, supporting your children, facing the future, and practical information such as on contact rights, the Sex Offender Register and the media. The booklet includes case examples and is packed with pages of practical tips on things such as 'thoughts to keep busy', 'dealing with different reactions' and 'dealing with the media'. The 'Supporting your children' sections covers how to talk about sexual offences with children, how to help them cope, guidance on children visiting prison, and what to do if the child has been abused.
