Person Shaped Support - Family Impact Service

Working across the UK, PSS is a social enterprise that seeks to help people get the most from life whether at home, in their family, in their health and well-being or within wider support networks. PSS work for people, with people and alongside people, and they have enabled the development of services such as Age Concern, Citizens Advice Bureau and Legal Aid.

There are four core areas in which PSS have a range of services, these are:

Creating homes.

Empowering communities.

Promoting wellbeing.

Strengthening families.

Within each core area PSS have a wide range of services which address different needs for a variety of age groups. PSS's Family Impact service focuses on the five outcomes identified by Every Child Matters, to support children and young people who are living with the consequences of parental problematic drug use, alcohol use and/or offending behaviour.

The service is delivered to families in Merseyside and promotes holistic wellbeing and ensures safety by removing risk. It was set up in 2006 following a number of key studies on the networks required to support vulnerable children and is delivered in partnership with Addiction and Offender Health, the Big Lottery Fund, the Henry Smith Charity and Liverpool City Council's Children's Services. The service uses a 'whole family approach' to rebuild and strengthen relationships and provide families with the tools necessary to achieve long term progress. The service provides: advice on what to tell children about parental imprisonment, 1:1 support for children, peer group support where children can meet others who share their experience and accompanied prison visits for children who do not have another suitable adult to support them.

Family Impact works alongside schools, prisons, probation and social services. Parents, including both the parent/carer and the prisoner parent post-release, can join the Family Recovery Programme where parents consider the impact imprisonment has had on their family and reflect on their parenting approach through the Nurturing Programme. The service also delivers an award winning support group for family members. Families can become Recovery Champions so they are able to support others. PSS bases their work on the latest research and is linked to universities both nationally and internationally.
